Anagama Firing

Picture

The firing took a week of our continuous attention:

Seven Artists from the Berea, Ky. Craft Guild co-operated in stoking the wood-fired Dragon Kiln 24 hours a day for four continuous days. It took one day to stack the kiln, four days to fire it and three days for cool down. Technicaly known as an "Anagama" or single-chamber kiln, this is referred to in Japan as a "Dragon Kiln". It is fired only once or twice per year and exclusively with wood . This is considered the highest art form in Japan.
